“Pills, Creams And Surgeons Are OK For Some People. But If You Really Want To Look & Feel Younger, Strength Training Exercises Are The Best Medicine.”
“Look,” says 2 X World Champion Kick Boxer, Bomber Barker, “Science and the knife have their place. I understand that. You hope that something in a tube or a bottle is going to work like magic and smooth out the wrinkles, rattle your brain back into action and help make you as loose limbed as you were when you were a kid. Might happen. But at the Bomb Shelter, if you work with me on a Strength Training Program that I’ve designed according to you personal age, weight, and current physical condition, then a transformation for the better will occur …… naturally. Think of it as exercise as medicine. You’ll definitely feel better.”
What is ‘Strength Training’?
Strength Training (also called resistance training or weight training) involves the use of resistance to muscular contraction to build the strength, anaerobic endurance and size of skeletal muscles. You end up burning calories more efficiently and living an overall healthier lifestyle with an increased ability to pursue the physical and mental activities that make you happy and provide you with a sense of achievement and satisfaction. The amazing thing is, as long as your health practitioner gives a tick of approval, age is no impediment to reaping the benefits Strength Training offers.
Examples of Strength Training include:
. Lifting weights
. Using resistance bands
. Using your body weight for resistance i.e. pushups, crunches, leg squats.
. Using weight machines
The mayoclinic.org: says “Lean muscle mass naturally diminishes with age.
Your body fat percentage will increase if you don’t do anything about it. Strength training can help you preserve and enhance your muscle mass at any age and may also help you to:
Develop stronger bones. By stressing your bones, Strength Training can increase bone density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis and falling over.
Manage your weight. Strength Training can help you manage or lose weight, and it can increase your metabolism to help you burn more calories.
Enhance your quality of life. Strength Training may enhance your quality of life and improve your ability to do everyday activities. It can also protect your joints from injury. Building muscle also contributes to improved balance and may reduce your risk of falls which most importantly can help you maintain independence as you age.
Manage chronic conditions. Strength Training can reduce the signs and symptoms of many chronic conditions, such as arthritis, back pain, obesity, heart disease, depression and diabetes. (Please contact your Dr for advice.)
Sharpen your thinking skills. Some research suggests that regular Strength Training may help improve thinking and learning skills for older adults.
Besides Bomber Barker, who else thinks exercise as medicine is a good idea?
Well Hippocrates (460 BCE. – 375 BCE.) for a start.
Hippocrates is the guy who is regarded as the father of medicine, particularly as it relates to ethics as framed in the Hippocratic Oath.
Among the numerous quotes attributed to Hippocrates, the one that stands out in relation to Strength Training is “If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise, not too little and not too much, we would have found the safest way to health.”
She was renowned for her contributions to advancing exercise and nutrition for women. Beecher co-founded her first school for women in 1823 and introduced a calisthenic exercises to the curriculum. In 1833 she expanded her innovative approach to women’s health to include lightweight resistance exercises for multiple repetitions. Her renown grew and today she is considered in many circles to be the founder of American style gymnastics for women.
Atlas, born Angelo Siciliano in New York twice won the title of World’s Most Perfectly Developed Man. He co- authored a training course on muscle control and isometric opposition exercises that eventually encompassed 13 lessons. With two business associates he created Charles Atlas, Ltd, whose mail-order selling techniques and advertisements became legendary. His courses are still popular today.
Joseph Pilates developed the floor exercises that now bear his name and are offered in fitness clubs and studios around the globe. The ideas and innovations he created are reflected in the equipment and techniques used today.
“The only bad workout is the one that didn’t happen.” – Unknown
“Take your life to a new level.” The Bomber is a true believer in the benefits of exercise as medicine and considers himself an absolute walking example of what can be achieved. “Routine is key,” he says, “You have to have a program you can stick to. I can help you with that. Before I start a program with anyone, the first thing we do is talk. So I can get to know you. Who you are, what you want to achieve and how much time and effort you want to devote to being the best you can be. No pressure. The exciting thing is, once you get going and you can feel the benefits of what we are doing ….. you’ll notice the change in you and so will your family and friends. It’s a win, win, win situation.”
Strength Training, even in small doses, if taken regularly, can help you think and feel better.
“Mind over body?” absolutely says The Bomber, “But first you have to give your mind something to work with. No point in sending out those signals to your legs telling them to start running up that hill if your muscles are not up to the job. My Strength Training programs are designed to connect the two so when your brain sends out a command your body has the ability to respond. The net result is ……. you feel good about yourself simply because you can do the stuff you want to do.”

“I’m happy for you to come into my gym, to have a look around and a chat …. to see if it’s you. If you think it might be, your first session is FREE. And remember, exercise is the best medicine because when taken correctly in small easy to manage doses, it helps negate the need for the medicines that come in calendar choreographed plastic boxes, needles and prescriptions.
If you’re of a certain age you may remember this.
“Whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.” Desiderata by Max Ehrmann 1927
“All of which will be much easier to achieve,” says The Bomber, “Especially the ‘Strive to be happy’ bit, if you get off your bottom, and do a little Strength Training with me.” The Bomber, Just Now.
