There’s No Excuse For Not Getting Fit

It’s a natural human trait to give up. To find an excuse for not doing something.

Some of the most common include, it’s too hard, there’s not enough time, it’s too expensive, I don’t want to embarrass myself, I’ll do it tomorrow, I’ll do it next week, my friends will laugh at me, and I’m just fine the way I am.

Once upon a time my next-door neighbour was a professional saxophone player. He practised daily. I was talking to him over our shared fence one time when I expressed an interest in learning a musical instrument. “Why don’t you?” he asked. “I’m too old.” I replied. He looked at me quizzically and said, “If you’re happy with that excuse.”

In an interview with Guitar World in 2020, Fender CEO Andy Mooney disclosed that his company had conducted what he described as “The most comprehensive bit of research that had ever been done in the industry.” One of the most telling pieces of information unveiled by the study was that 90% of first-time guitar players abandoned the instrument in the first year if not the first 90 days.

One thing you should never give up on is getting fit and staying that way. So, what if you’re not the next Jimi Hendrix? But failing to exercise regularly is one of the biggest causes of obesity, heart disease, depression, not being able to tie up your own shoelaces, and other related issues.

The good news is a new and greatly improved you is not the impossibility you might think.

Yes, You Still Should Get to the Gym After You Turn 60

Grant (Bomber) Barker, Owner, and Head Trainer at boutique gymnasium ‘The Bomb Shelter’ located in The Shire, Sydney, says, “Don’t believe your own excuses. It’s your inner voice sabotaging your success. Each excuse is just a roadblock you create for yourself. There is always a solution, and it always comes down to how badly you want to succeed, it’s that simple. Try, ditching your excuses and find the reason not to give up. Once you do that, the annoying little voice in your head will slowly fade away.”

Grant is a 2 X Kickboxing Champion and has over 30 years’ experience helping hundreds of people become fit and healthy. He enables them to turn their lives around and be satisfied and content with what they have been able to achieve.

“Most people,” he says, “Think you need to train every day to reap the benefits of exercise. With their commitments to work and family they reason there’s not enough time. Not true. The secret is consistency. Pick 3 days of the week and stick religiously to your timetable. You’ll quickly discover how rewarding exercise can be both physically and mentally. At the Bomb Shelter there’s no BS. Just good old hard work. That’s how you win, it’s not rocket science.”

When it comes to getting fit, Grant (Bomber) Barker is never short of a quote. “You’re never too old to be fitter than you are now. Procrastination is your enemy. If you sincerely want to get in better shape, you can.” he says.

The internet is littered with stories about how exercise helped people resurrect their lives.

There’s the one about the guy who used weight training to feel more in control after being diagnosed as bipolar. Even though he was extremely frail he was able to find a sympathetic trainer who designed a program for him that took little steps towards helping him regain control over his body and mind. Lifting weights literally saved his life.

Or the one about the lady who exercised her way to overcoming panic attacks. She simply walked into a gym one day and signed up for a personal trainer. She said being able to go there on a regular basis and lift things allowed her to gain control of her heart rate rather than having it controlling her. The program worked so well she went on to become a certified trainer herself and helped others enjoy the same benefits she had accumulated.

Still need convincing? A woman who was tired (No pun intended) of being overweight and having little energy took up Martial Arts Training and CrossFit* to help restore her blood pressure to normal, lower her cholesterol, lose plenty of kilos and subsequently, reduce her back pain. She became more productive in her everyday life and much happier to boot.

The only thing stopping you …. is you.

Stop thinking about excuses. Start exercising. You’ll feel better about yourself. Your family and friends will feel better about you. (They won’t have to worry so much.) And life …… you’ll be full of it.
