From isolated destinations like Kingscote on Kangaroo Island to bustling celebrity-approved hot spots like Byron Bay, there are a number of seaside towns you need to explore if you want to ensure you’ve made the most of all this country has to offer.

BYRON BAY, NSW
Byron Bay is no doubt one of Australia’s most popular coastal towns — and for good reason. Located on New South Wales’ far-north coast, the tourist destination is loved by both locals and sightseers for it’s beautiful beaches, inviting atmosphere and laid-back, bohemian vibe. Take a long walk along the coast, kayak with dolphins and snorkel through the Julian Rocks Nguthungulli Nature Reserve, all before sitting down to enjoy a nice meal at one of the town’s celebrated restaurants. HYAMS BEACH, NSW
Just a short three-hour drive from Sydney, Hyams Beach is a quaint coastal town in the Jervis Bay region that embodies the allure of its white sandy shores and clear turquoise waters. Perfect for both a summer getaway or a winter escape, the destination offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty of nature and the mystery of some of Australia’s most iconic wildlife. Swim with dolphins, watch for whales and set up camp at one of the destination’s welcoming campsites.

PALM BEACH, NSW
Located on Sydney’s picturesque Northern Beaches is Palm Beach, an inviting seaside town renowned for its perfect surf, proximity to the bustling CBD, and its appearance on Home and Away. Brimming with countless outdoor activities to partake in and a number of celebrated eateries to dine at — including Jonah’s on the hill at nearby Whale Beach — there’s no excuse not to venture over the bridge for a stay.

NOOSA HEADS, QUEENSLAND
While Queensland boasts a number of pristine beaches, there’s something about Noosa Heads that makes it one of the state’s very best. Offering up an enviable laid-back atmosphere, it invites guests to switch off and relax while in town. Shop at local boutiques, set off on a scenic hike, visit the farmers markets or lay by the beach with a good book. Yes, you really can have it all.

KINGSCOTE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA
As Kangaroo Island’s largest town, Kingscote is an isolated, yet alluring seaside city located on the island’s north coast. Here, you can visit the town’s popular rock pool, take a penguin tour with the Kangaroo Island Marine Centre, visit the famous Kangaroo Island Brewery, or graze on local produce at one of the many local cafes on the island.

APOLLO BAY, VICTORIA
While driving the iconic Great Ocean Road, be sure to stop off at Victoria’s scenic Apollo Bay. The town’s surroundings boast a number of waterfalls, lookouts and hiking trails — all of which invite you to get a better look at Victoria’s stunning coastline. Hire a bike, kayak, board or car to ensure you don’t miss a thing.

COTTESLOE, WA
Featuring breathtaking views of gorgeous sunsets over the Indian Ocean, sightings of the leafy sea dragon, stunning stretches of golden sand and a number of beautiful swimming spots, Cottesloe in Western Australia is a coastal town you should already have on your bucket list.

MARGARET RIVER, WA
Offering up the best of both worlds with a celebrated wine scene and renowned surf beaches, the Margaret River Region makes for the perfect year-round vacation. Embark on wine-tasting tours, hike picturesque trails, dine on local produce and take a dip in crystal-clear waters.

LORNE, VICTORIA
Another stop you won’t regret making on the Great Ocean Road is in Lorne. Walk the Mountjoy Parade across from the beautiful Lorne Beach, immerse yourself in the coastal town’s thriving art scene and be sure to head to Teddy’s Lookout for a view of the St. George River you won’t soon forget. For the most delicious burgers in town, pull up a chair at The Bottle of Milk.
