When it comes to lucrative paydays, Netflix and Amazon are toppling the big franchises. The pandemic has changed the world in more ways than one, but when it comes to the movie industry, Covid has completely reshaped perceptions of financial success. Gone are the days when films would top the box office and rake in billions — there simply aren’t enough cinemas open to make that a persisting reality. Instead, as Variety reports in their latest list of Hollywood’s highest-paid actors for 2021 and onwards, success comes hand-in-hand with streaming platforms. How many views has it garnered on Netflix? And how popular, exactly, has it appeared on HBO Max or Disney+?
If anything has remained constant, however, it’s the staggering amount of money stars are still earning from their projects. Though #17 has its actor picking up a respectable US$3 million, the numbers only increase exponentially from there, with four performers taking home an estimated US$20 million from their individual features. At the top of the round-up? A veteran of the industry, walking away with over US$100 million thanks to a two-sequel contract for one of 2019’s sleeper hits.
Welcome, it seems, to the “new deal economy” — one where streaming services, like Netflix and Amazon Prime have ousted traditional distribution studios as the top dogs, offering salaries that have left diminishing box office returns in the dust. Oh, and the only celebrity getting the best of both? None other than Tom Cruise, who earns his spot on Variety’s list with his payday from Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick.
Below, discover how much 17 of Hollywood’s top actors earned per film over the course of 2021, and in features yet to be released.
