Anyone who owns and loves their furry friends will at some stage be face by the most excruciating of decisions. What to do with their loved one, when the rest of the family go for a break. Be it a long weekend away or your annual holidays it doesn’t really matter, the problem is still the same. Naturally our first instinct is to take Fido or Rover with you. But this sadly is not always either practical, or even possible. But dog-friendly accommodation was almost impossible to find. Long car rides often cause terrible stress for dogs (many get car sick). And then there’s the question of who looks after them while you go on a day trip during your holiday. You can’t very well leave them alone in a strange holiday apartment, or Hotel/Motel.
To help and solve this dilemma and put to rest the hearts and minds of pet owners and lovers alike, “Don’t Fret Pet!” was established.
It’s a unique service providing a caring and homely environment for dogs whose owners need to go away. In order to provide this service, they have dog lovers who will welcome other people’s “family dogs” into their homes, and care of them as if they were their own.
When we spoke with Jenny Brearley the founder and owner of the company, she gave us a magnificent insight into the philosophy of her unique service. “You see, I felt terrible taking my eccentric Rhodesian
Ridgeback, Sophie, to dog boarding kennels. I wanted a more natural and homely alternative to concrete floors and wire cages. I hated the thought of Sophie having to cope with the barks and behaviours of a hundred other dogs of all breeds and backgrounds. There was no way I could enjoy my holiday. I felt guilty” she said.
“On top of that, it was inconvenient driving to the outer suburbs (where most dog boarding kennels are located) to drop Sophie off at times that didn’t suit me while trying to get ready to go away”.
We’ve all thought of the most obvious solutions friends and family. Well dear reader having been pressed upon for such duties I can only tell you how stressful and what a nightmare it really was. We asked Jenny what her thoughts about this were.
Friends and Family?
I’d tried leaving Sophie with friends and family, but I always felt like I was asking them a favour. Although they meant well, they weren’t really used to looking after dogs, so I was always worried about Sophie.
Neighbours?
I also tried having neighbours feed and keep an eye on Sophie, but again, I felt like I was putting them out. I was also afraid she would fret… or would get sick… or… 100 other things that could go wrong.
Jenny said: “the solution was simple”. She started “Don’t Fret Pet!” 24 years ago and created a network of dog lovers who could offer dog minding services in their own homes. “I screened potential minders to make sure they had experience caring for dogs and I provided them with information to ensure we could provide consistent, professional care to every client” she said.
We’ve won a whole swag of awards and we’ve been featured in heaps of newspapers and magazines. The proof of our success comes from over 23,500 wonderful clients, many of whom have sent us messages of thanks.
